Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) has announced that enforcement of new lifejacket regulations will commence on 1 July 2025, following a six-month educational grace period. These changes aim to enhance safety on Queensland waterways, particularly during high-risk boating activities.

Key Changes to Lifejacket Requirements

Under the updated regulations, wearing a lifejacket will be mandatory in the following situations:

  • Boating Alone or with Children Under 12: When operating an open boat less than 4.8 metres in length while underway.
  • Nighttime Boating: Between sunset and sunrise on an open boat less than 4.8 metres in length while underway.
  • Crossing Designated Coastal Bars: On an open boat or in the open area of a boat of any length, and on certain craft.
  • Children Aged 1 to Under 12 Years: Must wear a lifejacket on an open boat or in the open area of a boat of any length while underway.

These rules apply to various vessels, including small sailboats, pedal boats, rafts (including inflatables), rowboats (excluding Surf Life Saving Australia Club surfboats), and sea/surf kayaks.

Compliance and Enforcement

MSQ has emphasised education since the regulations took effect on 1 December 2024. However, starting 1 July 2025, non-compliance will result in penalties. Fines for not adhering to the new lifejacket laws will start at $333. Additionally, by 1 September 2025, all lifejackets must comply with the current Australian Standard AS4758. Older lifejackets not meeting this standard will no longer be considered compliant.
